Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: A Modern Cult Classic?

by The Nerd Card

Edgar Wright’s fantastic film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, where a young man must defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil ex-boyfriend’s one-by-one in order to win her heart and mind, masterfully combines a video game world and the real world into one reality.

While it flat-out bombed when it was released to the mainstream in August of 2010 (pulling in a meager $31 million on an $85 million budget, despite a thrilling premiere at Comic-Con one month earlier), it later found its way to becoming what many would now consider a cult classic.  The writing is spectacular, the special effects and transitions flawless, and the theme and music brilliant. But its perfection is ruined by a casting sin that we just can’t put our finger on. Why oh why, Edgar? Why oh why?!
